When a long SKU makes a barcode too wide

Many small warehouses let customers define their own SKUs. Once the code includes a customer prefix, category, product model, and variant, a linear barcode can become too wide for small labels. QR code SKU labels keep the code area more predictable while still carrying longer values.

Better fit for long SKU values

QR codes can hold longer SKU strings, serial numbers, or product attributes without stretching across the label like a linear barcode.

Stable square code area

A fixed QR code block is easier to place on 1 x 1, 2 x 1, or other compact label layouts.

Still readable by people

Keep the SKU text, product name, or variant below the QR code so warehouse staff can identify items without scanning every time.

Good QR SKU label use cases
Long custom SKUs
Useful when SKUs include customer prefixes, category codes, product model names, color, size, or other attributes.
Small product labels
Helpful when a Code 128 barcode becomes too wide or too dense for small thermal labels.
Fixed scanning setups
QR labels can work well when a scanner or camera is mounted at a consistent distance in a packing or checking workflow.
QR code SKU label FAQ
Is a QR code always better than a barcode for SKU labels?
No. Short SKUs often work very well with Code 128 barcodes. QR codes become more useful when the SKU is long, the label is small, or you need to include more data.
Should I still show the SKU text below the QR code?
Usually yes. Human-readable text helps warehouse staff identify products when a scanner is not available or when they need a quick visual check.
